Tonsillectomy is one of the most commonly performed operations worldwide. The reasons for undergoing tonsillectomy include recurrent tonsillitis, obstructive sleep apnoea (restricted breathing due to enlarged tonsils) or general medical conditions that are exacerbated by tonsil infections.
Surgery is performed via the mouth using coblation or bipolar diathermy techniques.
POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS
Pain will often worsen for the first 4-5 days following surgery, before gradually subsiding thereafter
Pain is often felt in the ears, which is a normal part of the recovery from surgery
Regular pain killers are recommended during this period
Regular eating and drinking will help to control any discomfort
Monitor for any fresh bleeding from the mouth - if present, advised to immediately attend your local Accident & Emergency department for review
